Ridgefield High School Guard Alex Hickey Commits to Case Western Reserve University

RIDGEFIELD, CT — Alex Hickey, a guard from Ridgefield High School in Connecticut by way of a postgraduate year at The Millbrook School, has committed to Case Western Reserve University. Alex brings elite shooting range, physical strength, and a defensive edge that coaches trust, pairing a high motor with the kind of physical guard play that translates at the next level. He will step into the UAA, one of the premier Division III conferences in the country, where toughness and consistency are required every night, and Alex is built to provide exactly that.

“I knew going into high school that I wanted to play college basketball, but I had no idea where to start,” said Alex. “There were a lot of ups and downs, including a shoulder injury that cut my senior season in half, and that is a big part of why I chose a postgraduate year at Millbrook. I met Coach Staley at a Real Hoops camp this fall, visited Case Western, and everything clicked. The coaches were clear on their vision, the team vibes were great, and the style of play fits me perfectly. I am beyond excited to become part of the Spartan family.”

A Shooter with Unlimited Range

Alex is a true floor spacer with deep range and full confidence from behind the arc. Case Western’s uptempo style and green light to shoot fits his strengths, especially as a guard who can sprint into shots, shoot off movement, and punish teams that help off him. His shooting gravity forces defensive adjustments and opens driving lanes for teammates.

Relentless Competitor and Defensive Leader

What separates Alex is his edge and consistency as a stopper. He is a great on ball defender who takes pride in making every possession difficult, and his physical strength will allow him to hold his ground early in his college career. Teammates feed off his intensity, and coaches value the way he leads through effort, toughness, and an unmistakable drive to win.

National Exposure Through Real Hoops

Alex’s recruitment accelerated through his work with Kevin Driscoll and Real Hoops, starting with meaningful film study and coach connections that helped get his game in front of high academic Division III programs. After the injury setback, the decision to take a postgraduate year created new momentum, and attending the Real Hoops New England Connection Camp at St Luke's proved pivotal. Alex connected with Case Western Coach Staley, which led to further conversations, a visit, and ultimately a commitment that matched both his academic and basketball goals.

Real Hoops CEO Kevin Driscoll on Alex’s Commitment

“Alex is the definition of a gamer and a competitor and he backs it up every possession on both ends,” said Kevin Driscoll, CEO of Real Hoops. “He handled adversity with maturity, kept working, and kept betting on his growth. Case Western is getting a tough, high character guard whose shooting and defensive leadership translate immediately.”

A Major Addition for Case Western Reserve

Alex gives Case Western a tough minded guard who can stretch the floor and bring real defensive presence at the point of attack. His strength, competitiveness, and leadership profile fit the physical style of the UAA. With his shooting as a weapon and his mentality as a tone setter, he projects as a player who can earn trust early and impact winning throughout his career.
